CHAPTER 5
SUICIDE IS PAINLESS
Title taken from motion picture DVD

NOVEL

Captain Waldowski, the dentist known as the Painless Pole, who has a pool table and a poker table (open 24 hours), suddenly becomes depressed and decides to commit suicide. Duke gives him a “black capsule” to knock him out, a mock Last Supper is arranged and everybody bids him farewell. The next day he is feeling better and ready for a game of poker.

The Painless Pole, beyond any shadow of a doubt, was the best-equipped dentist in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. He was the owner and operator of the Pride of Hamtramck. Officers and enlisted men from the entire area frequently visited the 4077th MASH, supposedly to take advantage of the shower facilities, but actually they came in hope of catching a glimpse, and one day a corporal from Mississippi spoke for them all.

“Ah’d purely love,” he said, “to see it angry.”

Painless was removed from the coffin and taken to a waiting helicopter of the 5th Air Rescue Squadron parked just behind the preop ward. At a height of about fifty feet over the ballfield, directly in front of The Swamp, he was given a large shot of benzedrine intravenously and lowered from the chopper by a rope. A string attached to the ripcord was pulled, and the chute opened. A rescue crew waited below holding a blanket. The pilot released the rope. Painless and his parachute, to the cheers of the gathering, plummeted eight feet into the blanket.

FILM

“Painless Pole” Waldowski, the “best equipped dentist in the army”, has suffered a “lack of performance” with a visiting nurse and now believes that he has latent homosexual tendencies, so he decides to commit suicide. Hawkeye, Trapper and Duke come up with a plan to use the “black capsule” (a fictitious, fast-acting poison); at an impromptu Last Supper, Painless takes the capsule and lies down in a coffin to the strains of “Suicide Is Painless.” Hawkeye then persuades Lt. “Dish” Schneider, one of the nurses who is returning to the U.S. the following day, to spend the night with Painless, thus curing him of his problems.
